Strawberry hot springs3/8/2023 Alcohol isn’t allowed in the springs anymore. One shuttle driver told me that he used to carry folks out over his shoulder because they were too drunk to negotiate the steps out. Unfortunately, hot water, alcohol and altitude don’t get along well. A decade ago, folks were permitted to bring booze down to the springs. Now, there’s a heated changing cabin partway down the steps.Īnother modification involves the consumption of alcohol. ![]() Years ago, the only changing room was a frigid teepee set up near the pools. We’ve seen numerous changes instituted at the hot springs. We typically soak here in the dead of winter, finding it’s the perfect way to end a day of skiing Steamboat powder. “We have a gardener who’s worked on the gardens for many years now and she takes a lot of pride in them,” said longtime manager Joe Stepan. In the summer months, a garden of flowers and potted plants line the route down. Guests in need of kneading can book treatments at one of the two massage rooms built into the hillside. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene, and while it is family-friendly, kids are expected to be quiet and behave.įlagstone stairs and walkways provide access from the parking lot up topside to the soaking pools below. The stream cools the water to pleasant soaking temperatures typically in the 100- to 106-degree range. The 140-degree hot water flows from the Earth and into a series of rock-hemmed pools beside a small creek. In winter, chains or four-wheel drive with snow tires are required with major fines levied on those who ignore the rule. Reaching the springs requires winding through town and heading up County Road 36. Johnson bought the springs in 1981, and over the past 37 years, he has transformed Strawberry Park into an outdoor showpiece. Realizing they couldn’t properly manage the property, the city planted a for-sale sign. “Just about everybody who came here in the ’70s camped at the hot springs until they found jobs.” “I guess there used to be 300 teepees up and down the road,” says local entrepreneur Don Johnson, who first visited on cross country skis. With no on-site monitoring, the springs became a hippie haven in the ’70s. Originally a homestead site, the land around the springs was donated to the town of Steamboat Springs in the early ’30s. “The sheriff likes to raid the place and arrest skinny-dippers.” “Take an emergency swimsuit down with you,” a fellow bather advised. It is a short walk down to the hot springs. NO ALCOHOL allowed in shuttles or at springs. You can, and should, bring your own non-alcoholic beverages in non-glass containers. No glass containers are allowed at the hot springs. No one under 18 is allowed at the hot springs after sunset. Clothing is optional once the sun goes down. The Strawberry Park Hot Springs are very popular with families during the day.Īdults only after dark.
